I think it was 4am when I finished it (and I was supposed to wake up at 7 for work), and then I could not sleep because I was just that stunned.
I spent most of the book trying to form an opinion about the main character, but the end was that last piece I needed. I did not know what I was getting into, did not see what was coming, but this one grabbed me faster than most books ever do, provided mystery and horror and ambiguity and titillation-and then its end spilled out and felt both natural and necessary. Solid pacing-just as long and just as concise as it needed to be. I think I’ll be processing it for a long while because this book hit all the right notes for me: I almost think I’ll need to re-write this review later on because the book floored me completely and I’m still processing it. Lee Smith, and this one has resonated with me the most for reasons I don’t think I fully understand.
